How to upgrade a solar thermal system

There are three basic ways you can upgrade your solar thermal system. You can choose to do one or all three, depending upon the condition of your system and how much extra heat you need to generate:

Solar Thermal Panels

Add more solar thermal panels

Obviously, this is dependent upon how much space you have to install the panels, but solar systems are usually fairly flexible, and can be added to bit by bit if needs be.

Bear in mind that adding extra panels isn’t just dependent upon how much roof area you have, but how much weight the roof can support as well.

A new inverter

If you’re adding extra panels, you will normally need a new inverter in any event, unless your existing inverter is more powerful than was necessary when you bought it.

String inverters have an average lifespan of ten years and tend to be the cheapest option.

Add more battery storage

This can be a wise move anyway, as the battery can act as a backup or you can use it if rates go up at a particular period.

If your solar setup is storage ready, then you can add a battery easily.

If it is not, you may need to hire a professional to add this manually or replace your system completely.

Upgrading existing solar thermal systems

If your current thermal solar system is old, inefficient and not producing as much power as it should, it may be time for a review and an upgrade. It could be money well spent.

Things may have changed in your household that mean you require more hot water – an extension to the building or the family, or a new wet room.

If your solar thermal system is using a traditional string inverter then all of your panels will only work as well as the weakest panel. This type of inverter is outdated and may be hindering your system’s output.

Your existing panels may be damaged or degraded – we can check and report of the condition and efficiency of your install when you book a free survey with us by calling 0330 124 2941.

Possible solar thermal system technical upgrades

There is a range of different equipment that can we can add or replace that can improve the efficiency of your solar thermal system, including:

  • high efficiency solar pumps
  • modern, intelligent solar controllers
  • highly efficiency insulation
  • solar data loggers
  • efficiency meters

Upgrade to a flat plate collector system

Evacuated flat plate collectors provide the highest energy conversion efficiency in non-concentrating solar collectors.

Flat-plate solar collectors usually have three main components:

  • A flat metal plate that intercepts and absorbs solar energy.
  • A transparent cover that allows solar energy to pass through the cover and reduces heat loss from the absorber.
  • A layer of insulation on the back of the absorber to reduce heat loss
